Reflecting growing congruence in ties, United States designated india "A major defence partner", "US-India Pacific command" as a regional priority and security cooperation to work towards upholding a international rules- based order and ensuring respect for international law in the region, US passed an amendment to National Defense Authorisation Act (NDAA), 2018, a $621.5 billion defence expenditure bill to advance defence cooperation with India and signed into law a legislation aimed at enhancing America's leadership in the Indo-Pacific region, strengthening multifaceted ties with India, US-INDIA signed agreements ((LEMOA) to strengthen the entire gamut of defense and security issues on the U.S.-India agenda, including cutting edge defense technology collaboration, expanding military-to-military exchanges, The pact gives both countries access to designated military facilities on either side for the purpose of refuelling and replenishment in primarily four areas — port calls, joint exercises, training and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. US-INDIA signed he Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) would facilitate exchange of geospatial information between India and United States for both military and civilian use. US-INDIA signed the 'Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA)' agreement a "milestone" in the relationship and asserted that the pact would enhance India's defence capability and preparedness. The agreement will allow India to get advanced encrypted military technology and hardware from the United States. The agreement would help give a legal framework for defence technology transfer to strengthen & defence military ties. COMCASA would give India access to sophisticated and advanced technologies from the United States while buying high-end American defence equipment.


US President Donald Trump has renamed Indo-Pacific, Which is a biogeographic region comprising the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the western and central Pacific Ocean. India-USA reaffirmed that closer U.S.-India cooperation is instrumental to promoting security and prosperity in the broader Indo-Pacific region and beyond. Both sides committed to work together and in concert with other partners toward advancing a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region, based on recognition of ASEAN centrality and on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, international rule of law, good governance, free and fair trade, and freedom of navigation and overflight. 


Indo-pacific is an international defence and maritime space stretching from the East Africa and West Asia, across the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, to East Asia. India, Japan and US agree that free, open, inclusive and internationsl rules-based order is essential to strengthen multilateralism across the ASEAN nations and and also emphasised freedom of navigation and overflights, and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law. Both the countries regard each other as critical partners in their Indo-Pacific strategies. In principle, the two countries have a similar vision on the principles and values of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). India and the US champion for a FOIP “in which all nations, large and small, are secure in their sovereignty and able to pursue economic growth consistent with accepted international rules, norms, and principles of fair competition; there is peaceful resolution of disputes; adherence to international law including the freedom of navigation and overflight. Underscoring the important role of India in America's Indo-Pacific strategy, partnership between the two nations in the region stands on a shared commitment to uphold the international rule of law, freedom of navigation and counter-terrorism to deal with contemporary challenges.
