India and United Nations A Legitimacy of Global Power

Today in world faces geopolitical aggression and intransigence: Conflicts are becoming protracted by intense rivalries between global powers and regional powers as they support proxies to wage war overseas thereby it affects UN vitality, legitimacy, transparency. 

They should overcome from narrow Geopolitical interest, adoption of aggressive and confrontational approach and overly intrusive methods, without consultation and consent of the country concerned have been counterproductive, leading only to politicisation of United Nations. Unjust or discriminatory laws that do not balance competing interests in a fair manner, or those designed and implemented by powers that are not representative, only fuel long term conflict.  

Multilateralism is necessary to manage a globalised and interconnected world. However, today multilateralism appears to be under serious strain. Effective multilateralism and international rule of law requires that the global governance structures should reflect contemporary realities. The current UN structures were designed for a bygone era by a mere handful of nation states. For retaining legitimacy and effectiveness, fundamental reform of these structures, especially the Security Council is needed. India strongly believes that cooperative and effective multilateralism is the only answer to the range of inter-connected challenges that we face in our inter-dependentworld. This points other strong need for Rule of Law at an international level. Effective multilateralism and international rule of law requires that the global governance structures should reflect contemporary realities.

Cognizant of the profound changes the world is undergoing and the global security challenges and threats faced by the international community, we commit to enhance communication and cooperation in international fora on issues concerning international peace and security. We reiterate our commitment to safeguarding world peace and security and to upholding the basic norms of the international law, and the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations including sovereign equality and non-interference in other countries' internal affairs. 

India has, and will, continue to be a responsible member of the international community. India abide by all the applicable international Laws and peaceful settlement of disputes according to laid down international laws. India places high importance on peaceful international dispute settlement. India believes in a legacy of multilateralism in upholding International Laws, obligations and respecting the integrity, unity and Sovereignty of Nations. India plays an influential role to guarantee and maintain international peace and security in conformity with principal of international Laws. We reaffirm our commitment to helping overcome the significant challenges currently facing multilateralism, as well as upholding the central role of the UN in international affairs and respecting international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, its purposes and principles. We have underscored support  for the efforts of the United Nations as a universal multilateral organisation in maintaining international peace and security, advancing global development, and promoting and protecting human rights. They advocate strengthening of the key role of the UN Security Council, which, in accordance with the UN Charter, is entrusted with the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. responsible participant in the modern system of international relations, will enhance its participation in efforts to ensure peace and security, consistently advocating the resolution of international and regional conflicts by exclusively peaceful political and diplomatic means, based on the principles of equality, respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs  of other countries, the non-use of force or the threat of force. We reiterated support to the UN-centered international system, strived to uphold the role of the UN Security Council in maintaining global peace and security under the principle of the UN Charter.

The global governance architecture needs to better reflect the realities of today. India has repeatedly affirmed the need for an early reform of the UN Security Council including the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership to enhance its legitimacy, effectiveness and representativeness. India has reiterated strong commitment to an early and comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council. India called for result-oriented intergovernmental negotiations on it to make the top organ of the world body more effective in dealing with the complex global challenges on international peace and security. A reformed UNSC, with expansion in permanent and non permanent categories, would enhance the council's credibility, transparency in dealing with international complex challenges. 

India has repeatedly affirmed the need for an early reform of the UN Security Council including the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership to enhance its legitimacy, effectiveness and representativeness. India remained commitment to promoting the reform of the multilateral system through cooperation and coordination in all relevant multilateral fora and international organisations including the WTO and groupings of G20, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), Brazil, South Africa, India and China (BASIC), and G-77, We reaffirm our commitment to contribute to safeguarding a fair and equitable international order based on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations including through consistent and universal respect and adherence to the principles and rules of international law in their inter-relation and integrity, compliance by all states with their international legal obligations. The United Nations represents our collective recognition that only cooperative and effective multilateralism can enable peace and prosperity in the context of the range of inter-connected challenges that we face in our inter-dependent world. 

India strongly believes in multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes according to laid down international laws. India believes in a legacy of multilateralism in upholding International Laws, obligations and respecting the integrity, unity and Sovereignty of Nations. India plays an influential role to guarantee and maintain international peace and security in conformity with principal of international Laws. India firmly believes in the efficacy of multilateralism and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter. It is imperative to have comprehensive reforms of the United Nations and its Security Council to make it more representative and effective.

India’s foreign policy advocated the principles of friendship and co-operation with all the countries of the world irrespective of their political systems. Especially the establishment of friendly relations with the neighbouring countries was the principal plank of India’s foreign policy. In order to achieve its national interests/objectives and to promote international peace, India had maintained good and friendly relations with almost all countries of the world. While securing the interests, the conduct of the Indian foreign policy was governed by the principles such as preservation of sovereign independence, pursuance of independent foreign policy by avoiding alignment with power blocs, mutual understanding and cooperation, promoting international peace and prosperity etc. India advocated the concept of peaceful co-existence with other nations of the world and mutual settlement of various disputes amongst the countries, without the interference of the super powers, have also been taken care of while framing the foreign policy of independent India.
